Volkswagen Microbus — The report claims that Volkswagen is currently planning to bring the iconic Volkswagen Minibus to life. But this time, it will only be offered as a pure electric vehicle with some autonomous driving feature. Along with Volkswagen ID concept, the electric Microbus will be the pioneer of the Germany’s company venture into EV market in 2020.
Volkswagen Microbus Specifications
Just like VW I.D. concept, electric VW Microbus will benefit from the flexible MEB platform. However, the platform will undergo some changes to make it more suitable with the 7-seater MPV characteristics. As a result, we can expect the wheelbase to grow longer and the tracks wider.
In terms of shape and exterior design, it seems like VW will opt for the signature Microbus body style to give some sense of nostalgia and attract Microbus’ enthusiasts to purchase the EV. Hence, it is safe to say that we will say hello again to the MPV’s original upright windshield and rear end stance.
Furthermore, some reports claim that new Microbus will come with sliding door and easier access to the third row. But what exactly easier access to that will look like remains a mystery.
Powertrain, Electric Range details
It is reported that a 122 kW electric motor will be mounted to the rear axle, transferring drive exclusively to the rear wheels. But due to the versatility of the MEB platform, it seems like the all-wheel drive is also possible to come as an option.
The company has not confirmed anything regarding the battery pack that will power the car. However, it is rumored that the company is planning to provide a huge floor area that can accommodate a large battery which will be enough to give up to 500 km (around 310 miles) range in just one single charge.
Providing enough space for the liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery is one thing, but the biggest challenge is the cost. Even in 2020, such a large battery definitely will be very expensive. Despite its impressive range, such an exorbitant price might make it harder for electric Microbus to compete with other EV by the time it is launched.
Volkswagen Microbus Price and Release Date
No official release date yet. But considering VW will venture to the electric market by the end of the decade. We can expect Volkswagen Microbus to debut around the same time. For your information, Volkswagen I.D. concept will enter production in 2019. Therefore, we can expect the Microbus to follow suit soon after some time in early 2020.
