Jeep K8 Hybrid . It was only last week a couple of teaser images of a Jeep SUV concept going around the internet ahead of its debut at April 19’s Shanghai Auto Show. Now, we already got another set of hints of the new SUV concept in the form of sketches.
While the teaser images are very blurry, the sketches are pretty clear so we can finally catch some of the exterior elements that might come in the SUV concept, which is rumored to be called K8. It is said that the concept will come with a hybrid powertrain.
Jeep K8 Hybrid Specifications
At first glance, especially when looking at the shape of the headlights and taillights from the teaser images and sketches, you might think that it is a Cherokee model, especially because a prototype of a long wheelbase Cherokee has been spied testing not so long ago.
However, if we take a look closer at the traditional SUV shape, it is clear that the car in the teaser images and sketches is not a Cherokee, but something based on it. It is very likely that the Jeep K8 concept will follow Cherokee’s 3-row layout. However, judging from its compact dimension, it seems like the K8 will come with 5 + 2 seating configuration instead of Cherokee’s 7-seat layout, with the rearmost part only suitable for children.
Speaking of the long wheelbase Cherokee, it is reported that it has been built in China and it is developed specifically to secure its high number of sales in the People’s Republic. The customers in China always prefer a car with the spacious cabin, so the decision to make a long wheelbase Cherokee is a good strategy, considering China is Jeep’s second largest market after the states and its upcoming model, Jeep K8 is more of a compact SUV.
Back to the Jeep K8, its most noteworthy design elements that we can see from the images and sketches is its typical Jeep front face, along with 7-slot grille and muscular fender.
No news yet on the powertrain, but it is reported that the production car will receive some form of electrification. It is very likely that a plugin hybrid powertrain will be available in the lineup. According to last year’s report, Jeep’s newest SUV will receive a conventional 4-cylinder engine. But there is also a possibility that the highly anticipated GME “Hurricane” turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that will debut in 2018 Wrangler will also join the engine lineup.
Jeep K8 Hybrid Release Date and price
It is still too early to tell when Jeep K8 will finally be released. But according to rumors, it will not be too long until the car arrives in the market. Now the problem is, which market? Jeep has not announced whether the new K8 will be exclusive to China market only or will also be available globally.
Let’s just wait for further updates on the upcoming 2017 Auto Shanghai next week. Once it is launched to the market, it will go up against the likes of Volkswagen Tiguan, Honda CR-V, as well as the new Mazda CX-57 that is about to come soon.
