Mercedes-AMG ‘Project One’ Will Have 1,000 HP. In the last Paris Auto Show, Mercedes-AMG confirmed its plan to build a street legal hypercar that will be powered by AMG F1 race car’s powertrain. Mercedes boss, Dieter Zetsche even said that ‘Project One’, the code name of the hypercar, is aimed to be the first street-legal car in the world that is powered by an F1 engine.
With “Creating benchmark driving pleasure” as its tagline, it is clear that the company wants to create a car that is focused on driving comfort and enjoyment instead of lap times.
Mercedes-AMG Project One Specifications
It is not a secret that Red Bull Racing is also currently building similar hypercar with the F-1 engine. The car is developed with Aston Martin, and it is codenamed AM-RB 001. Since a potential rival is currently in development as well, Mercedes-AMG keeps all the details to themselves. But it turns out, and it doesn’t stop the AMG boss, Tobias Moers to spill some secrets about Project One at 2017 Detroit Auto Show.
Moers said that AMG Project One will have at least 1,000 HP. Underline the “at least” part since it indicates that it is not a final number and it might offer even more power in tits production ready form. Mercedes-AMG’s 2015 F1 car’s engine will be responsible for generating those ponies. But, it will also be tweaked so that it will be suitable for road use.
The F1 car’s powertrain includes a 1.6 L turbocharged V6 engine, a lithium ion battery, and two motor generators. Speaking of the motor generators, each has a different function. The first one is connected to the main driveshaft. It is responsible for sending power to the rear wheels as well as recover some energy under braking. Meanwhile, the second motor generator is mated to the turbochargers, and it contributes in preventing lag.
Still according to Moers, Mercedes-AMG Project One will have some differences with the F1 car. Firstly, the street hypercar will be equipped with at least one—or possibly two—electric motor generator. This is something the F1 car doesn’t have.
The electric motor’s duty is to transfer drive to the front wheels, making the car an all-wheel drive. Furthermore, Moers also said that the car could have small electric range, probably around 15 miles.
Besides spilling out some details, Moers also used the auto show to deny some rumors surrounding Project One. Moers confirmed that this 1,000 HP hypercar is an in-house project and the company is not cooperating with outside parties to develop the car.
He stated this because previously, it is rumored that Lotus Engineering is responsible for developing Project One’s handling. Furthermore, contrary to the rumors that have been going around, Moers boldly stated that R50 will not be the official name of Project One.
Mercedes-AMG Project One Price and Release Date
It is rumored that Mercedes-AMG Project One will be ready to debut in 2017 Frankfurt Auto Show. And, its price could reach € 2.4 million (around USD 2.54 million). Moers once stated that no more than 300 examples will be built and all of them could probably be sold out by the time of its launching.
