Lamborghini Urus Plug-in Hybrid — Confirmed, Lamborghini Urus Will Come with Plugin Hybrid Variant in 2018. Lamborghini has not produced any SUV since LM002 that was on sale between 1986 and 1993. Right when everybody thinks this Lamborghini does not have any interest to jump into SUV market like every other company, this Italian luxury automaker announced that Lamborghini Urus SUV will hit the market in 2018.
The surprise doesn’t stop there as Maurizio Reggiani, Lamborghini’s R&D boss recently confirmed that a plug-in hybrid variant will join the brand new SUV lineup. Furthermore, it is reported that Urus hybrid will share a platform with Audi Q7 and Bentley Bentayga. As a consequent, it will also feature active anti-roll suspension with 48V battery power.
2018 Lamborghini Urus Plug-in Hybrid Specifications
The new Lamborghini Urus Plug-in Hybrid is the brand’s first plug-in hybrid and also the only one in the entire lineup. Actually, this is not the first time Lamborghini ventured to the plugin hybrid powertrain world. A few years ago, the company introduced Asterion hybrid concept. That featuring a naturally aspirated 5.2 L V10 engine accompanied by three electric motors. The idea sounds promising. Unfortunately, it stays as a concept since up to this time, the company doesn’t have any intention to send it into production.
As for 2018 Urus PHEV, it has a lot on its plate. Besides being the first model to receive a plug-in hybrid variant, this SUV also become the brand’s first ever turbocharged model. According to Reggiani, SUV must produce huge torque, mainly to match the vehicle’s weight. As a result, turbocharging is definitely “mandatory” for this Lamborghini SUV.
Diesel definitely can help delivering more torque. However, it is reported that Lamborghini doesn’t have any intention to give Urus a diesel variant. Furthermore, there is also still no information whether a fully electric version will join the lineup or not. But, the possibility is not ruled out so let’s just wait for Lamborghini to surprise us. Even though a rear-wheel drive Huracan is now available, it seems like Urus will only be offered as a four-wheel drive to retain its off-road credential.
Just like Huracan and Aventador, the new Lamborghini Urus Plug-in Hybrid SUV will still feature a naturally aspirated engine. However, unlike the first two models that are powered by V10 and V12 engine respectively, Urus will get its power courtesy of a Biturbo 4.0 L V8 engine. Reggiani claims that the V10 and V12 engine is ditched for a good purpose.
