2018 Kia Stonic . Since Nissan shook the world with Juke a few years ago, we know that every automaker has been putting a lot of interest in venturing into the world of B-segment SUV, and Kia is not an exception. We also know that Kia has been working on a potential Nissan Juke rival for a pretty long time and it seems like the South Korean automaker is finally ready to reveal its newest SUV. The automaker itself has not said anything to confirm this. But, Kia’s recent trademark filing suggests that the launching of the highly anticipated Juke rival is just around the corner.
#Updated: February 2, 2017:
We know that both Hyundai and Kia are currently developing a B-segment crossover. And, we are definitely curious which South Korean automaker will deliver a better car. While we have seen the spy photos of Hyundai’s new subcompact crossover, this is the first time we get a glimpse of Kia’s newest car that is rumored to be called Stonic.
Even though Kia has not officially confirmed that their new model will be called Stonic, a recent trademark filing indicates that the name is reserved for the new subcompact crossover that will be released globally. Before Stonic, a similar sized KX3 has also been launched, but it is only available in China and some specific market.
Kia Stonic Specifications
Kia filed the trademark application for ‘Stonic’ on October 19, 2016. And, according to Just-Auto, the recently trademarked name will be used for YB SUV, Kia’s upcoming subcompact crossover that is set to challenge Nissan’s Juke popularity in the Western market.
Exterior, Interior Design
Kia doesn’t want to reveal anything about the so-called Stonic SUV. So, no one knows how the car will look like or what engine will come under its bonnet. However, according to some speculations, Stonic will adopt the same architecture with Dongfeng Yueda Kia KX3 which is of similar size with what Stonic will be.
Kia KX3 is not sold in Europe, but it is pretty popular in the Chinese market. KX3 is rejected by Kia Motors Europe because it is deemed ‘too unsophisticated’ and not suitable to be used in European street where people usually drive at high speed. Unlike KX3 that is later announced as China expensive car, Stonic is targeted at western market.
As a result, if the new SUV will indeed use KX3 architecture, the similarity between the two models will end there. As for the rest of the car, everything will be designed with European buyers’ needs in mind.
Just like other vague details about Stonic, we also don’t know where the SUV will be assembled. However, some rumors said that Kia had chosen the Sohari plant in South Korea as the sacred location where the B-segment SUV will be built. In addition to Sohari plant, it is reported that Stonic will also be produced in Kia’s Slovenia and Mexico factory.
#Updated: February 2, 2017: In terms of design, it seems like 2018 Kia Stonic will take lots of inspirations from the all-new Rio. From the spy shots, we can see that the shape of the C-pillar, as well as the rear windows, is clearly taken from the Rio. Furthermore, the mule also spotted rolling on new Rio’s 17” alloy wheels.
But it’s not going to look like a bigger version of the popular supermini since it will also borrow some visual cues from the physically appealing 2013 Provo concept.
This is only the first time the new subcompact crossover posed for spy camera, so the details are still very vague. But we definitely can expect to see more interesting things in the next batches of spy shots.

We have a lot of expectation about this SUV. And, we are curious on how Kia plans to rival Nissan Juke with its upcoming YB SUV. Unfortunately, we have to be super patient because the possibility is high that Stonic will not appear at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show.
#Updated: Febuary 2, 2017: No words yet regarding the engine, but it seems like the new Stonic will get the same engine lineup with fourth-generation Rio. It means the car could get a 1.0 L 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with 100 and 120 HP. Both versions will deliver 171 Nm of torque. In addition, a 1.4 L diesel unit will also be available. This engine will generate 76 HP and 89 HP with 240 Nm of torque for both versions. It is reported that the diesel mill has 3.5/10 km (67.2 mpg) fuel economy.
Cheaper Kia Rio models also come with a naturally aspirated 1.25 and 1.4 L petrol engine. However, it is highly possible that those units will not be featured in Kia Stoic since they won’t be enough to power the heavier subcompact crossover.
Furthermore, it is still unclear whether the Stonic 2018 will get an all-wheel drive treatment or not. AWD definitely will be an excellent selling point considering some of its potential rivals, like Nissan Juke, for example, comes with AWD system.
However, if Kia decides that 2018 Stonic should follow the footsteps of its Chinese spec sibling, the KX3, it is safe to say that the new B-segment crossover will exclusively come with the front-wheel drive system. Moreover, it is reported that both manual and automatic transmission will be offered.
2018 Kia Stonic Release Date and Price
It seems like March is too early to launch this SUV. Besides, Kia will not have the time to promote Stonic since Kia plans to launch the diesel version of Stinger and the newest Picanto at the said auto show. And, this South Korean automaker definitely will give its undivided attention to the two new models.
So, Frankfurt Motor Show on September probably will be the best time to debut Stonic. If this is true, we can expect more updates and media preview of the SUV in August. Once Stonic hits the market, it will not only compete with Nissan Juke but also the likes of Peugeot 2008, Renault Captur and Opel Mokka.
#Updated: February 2, 2017: We can expect 2018 Kia Stonic to be officially unveiled in Europe later this year, probably at 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show next September. It will be introduced in North American shore a few months later, maybe at Los Angeles Auto Show in December or at North American International Auto Show early next year.
