Honda S660 Based Mugen GARU Concept . 2017 Honda Salon has been starting since yesterday, January 13th, and will continue until the 15th. Various established brands from Honda, Toyota to Subaru uses this event to unveil their newest Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) cars. As for Mugen, Honda’s racing and tuning subdivision, its entry for this year’s Tokyo Auto Salon is Mugen GARU, a concept-bodied version of Honda S660 roadster.
Honda S660 Mugen GARU Specifications
Speaking of the S660, this mid-engined roadster debuted in March 2015 and immediately hit the local market a month after. The car is powered by a 0.66 L turbocharged 3-cylinder gas unit, delivering 64 PS (66 HP). Even though it is equipped with the small engine, just like a typical Kei car, it offers sports car performance supported by mid-engined rear-wheel drive layout. And also, a specially developed turbocharger that will ensure quick response despite the rotation range. The engine is paired to a new 6-speed manual transmission, but 7-speed CVT gearbox is also offered.
Even though the concept is based on S660, regarding design, it looks pretty different with the roadster. It still features S660’s rounded and compact body along with some exceptional styling elements, but aside of the door handle, the headlights and taillight lamps, the exterior is completely tweaked. As a matter of fact, except the windows, other exterior elements are custom parts. It sounds so good, but the customized car is nothing new in Tokyo Auto Salon.
The same goes for the interior. Mugen says that all the interior parts are made with great care. In addition to the custom creation exterior elements, one of the most noteworthy parts of the exterior is the front face. Even since the very first glance, it is not that hard to recognize that the front bears a strong resemblance to Bugatti Veyron. Is it a coincidence? Well, it’s hard to tell.

In the powertrain department, let’s not expect anything. Despite its aggressive sports car like performance, in GARU’s heart is still Honda S660 small engine. It will not be the fastest car in the world, not even in its hometown, but at least it looks hardcore. With its large body, big wheels and aggressive looking wheel arches, everybody will think it is a super high-performance car with hundreds of ponies.
Besides GARU, Mugen also brings Mugen FREED and Mugen’s Super Formula Series car the SF14. While, Honda brings the wide range of prototypes including Civic Type R, S660 Neo Classic, and Honda Vezel Gear crossover.
Tokyo Auto Salon is indeed a very interesting event where we can see plenty of customized vehicles from various automakers. Aside of Honda and Mugen, some other cars from other brands such as Toyota C-HR by TRD and Subaru STI models also make their debut at the Makuhari Messe.
Mugen has not confirmed when GARU will enter production, or whether it will make it into production. But let’s not get our hopes up since a concept like this rarely see the light of the day and is intended for show purposes only.
