Genesis GV80 . Last year, Genesis announced that they will grow the number of car models in their lineup from two to six by 2020. At this year’s New York International Auto Show, the Hyundai’s luxury brand finally unveiled one of its newest concepts to enrich their lineup. This time, it is a luxury SUV named GV80, which also will be the brand’s first luxury SUV.
It is definitely not surprising to see Genesis spawns an SUV to its lineup considering its two first models, the G80 and G90 are all sedans. Furthermore, in a world dominated by SUV, it will be very unwise if such a brand like Genesis doesn’t produce its own SUV.
Speaking of SUV, there will be at least two SUV’s among Genesis’ six models. The first one is a mid-size luxury SUV, probably something like BMW X5 and the other one is an entry level SUV that will compete with the likes of X3.
Genesis GV80 Specifications
Since the very first glance, we can clearly see that this Genesis GV80 SUV concept looks similar with Bentley Bentayga. Well, it is not really a coincidence since two years ago, only a couple of months before Genesis is launched, Bentley design chief, Luc Doncerwolke, moved to Hyundai.
Doncerwolke really gives plenty of changes in term of design to Genesis. As a matter of fact, GV80 will solve G80 and G90’s biggest problem, which is the lack of identity despite the sedans attractive design. It means GV80 will be a starting point of the brand’s design direction for the future.
On the exterior, GV80 shows plenty of sleek and elegant lines that make the SUV looks luxurious but still sporty at the same time. One of the most noteworthy design elements we can see is the line above the door handle. Instead of the stop at the rear flank like in most cars, the line diminishes smoothly into the rear door. Furthermore, GV80 also has stunning Volvo-like thin headlights above the front fender.

It is reported that Genesis’ new SUV will follow Bentley’s details regarding design. However, since that direction will cost a lot, Genesis also needs to find a way to prevent the production from going over budget.
Even with all the stunning and out of the box details, Genesis GV80 will still get traditional roofline, as well as SUV’s signature, squared off shape which will be necessary to make the cabin more spacious. Speaking of the cabin, the luxury vibe inside the car will be elevated by the addition of premium materials like leather, ash wood, and aluminum trim.
Genesis has not spilled any details regarding the powertrain. But one thing for sure, this luxury SUV is going to be powered by the latest hydro fuel cell plug-in hybrid technology.
Genesis GV80 Release Date and Price
There is no information yet regarding when the production version of Genesis GV80 will be released to the market since the automaker has yet to give any hint about the production timeline. However, it is reported that the production version will definitely come. This is certainly a good news since the luxury SUV is too good to just stay as a concept.
