Bentley Continental GT Plug-in Hybrid – In the last Automotive News World Congress, Bentley’s CEO, Wolfgang Duerheimer, once again confirmed the company’s plan to implement plugin hybrid powertrain to all its future models and Bentley Continental GT is one of them.
Bentley Continental GT Plug-in Hybrid Specifications
Duerheimer told Automotive News that the highly anticipated eco-friendly Continental GT will get an electric motor paired to a V6 unit as its internal combustion component. Furthermore, the CEO also said that the hybrid Conti GT will have a power that will match the current V8, hinting to about 500 HP as well as a powertrain that will not only focus on fuel economy but also sensational performance.
While other automakers see hybrid powertrain as a mere “transitional period” to a more advanced and efficient fully electric vehicle era, Bentley and Wolfgang Duerheimer have a very different opinion. Instead of just a trend that will quickly pass, Duerheimer sees hybrid powertrain as a potential because it can combine the best thing of both internal combustion engine and electric powertrain.
We have to agree with what Duerheimer says because we somehow are still depended on petrol and diesel power but in the same time. We are running towards an era where fuel emissions regulations will just get stricter and stricter, especially in the major cities.
According to Duerheimer, there are two reasons why plug-in hybrid powertrain is highly relevant and will not go out of the way anytime soon. Firstly, it will give the users freedom to go to city centers even when gas and diesel vehicles are banned in the future.
Secondly, no matter how good fully electric car might sound, it still has one big issue that has yet to be tackled—the short range. The electric vehicle cannot be used to cover long trips, but plugin hybrid vehicle is up for the task. When the battery power runs out, the internal combustion engine will take over.
“To cover long distances and to make it from one city to another—and you travel long distances in the US.—I think the combustion engine will follow us for a long time,” Duerheimer stated.
Bentley Continental GT Plug-in Hybrid Release Date and Price
Continental GT will not be the first plugin hybrid model Bentley launches as the honor goes to Bentayga. The British automaker has not given us the exact launching date for the plugin hybrid version of Bentayga. But, it seems like 2018 it will be ready to hit dealerships in 2018.
As for the Continental GT, it will get its plug-in hybrid powertrain right after Bentayga. The V6 model will be launched after the W12 version, and then the V8 model will follow suit behind the V6.
We don’t know yet how the car will look like. But, BridgeToGantry has captured a spy video of what could be the highly anticipated plug-in hybrid Continental GT. Just watch the video, and it will not be hard to catch the sound of the six-cylinder unit when the car sprints in Nurburgring.
But that’s all you will get about the powertrain since we cannot conclude what kind of V6 the car is equipped with just by watching the video. It might be Panamera’s 3.0 L twin-turbo V6. But, 4S’ 2.9 L twin-turbo V6 is a good candidate as well.
