2019 BMW i8 Spyder . We have seen the prototype of the upcoming BMW i8 coupe several times since several months ago, making us curious how its convertible sibling will look like. Well, thankfully now we only need to wait until both cars finally go on sale because the new BMW i8 Spyder was spotted testing for the first time in the snow a few weeks ago.
It is taking longer than expected but at least it is here, and so far, we like what we saw. The good thing about the spy shots of the convertible is the fact that the coupe was also captured in some of the shots. As a result, we finally can see the design differences between the two body types.
2019 BMW i8 Spyder Specifications
One of the most noteworthy parts of the design is the rear windshield. Instead of the sloping rear windshield, we have seen in the Coupe, i8 Spyder gets the small vertical rear window as well as a beautiful looking engine cover at that part.
Another interesting thing we have been waiting for about this convertible is what kind of top the Bavarian automaker will give to it. From the spy shots, we can see that the car get a soft top and the design is pretty much the same with the i8 Spyder concept that was introduced around five years ago back in 2012. In addition, the front fascia is redesigned, and it will get butterfly doors, just like the coupe.
BMW has not given us any details about the i8 Spyder 2019 interior, but we definitely can expect it to come with iFuture Interaction concept technology that was introduced to the public at 2016 CES. If it is true, then we can also anticipate the gesture control technology as well as multiple digital displays that came with the concept, which is also a convertible.
Both the 2019 i8 Spyder and its coupe sibling will still be powered by the 1.5 L inline-3 turbocharged engine from the current model. It will also be paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission as well as an electric motor. However, the engine will be upgraded so that we will see some significant boost of power from the current 362 HP and 420-pound feet of torque.

The battery capacity also will be increased, and it will also be made more efficient so that the new i8 Spyder and coupe will have full electric range. We don’t know yet how many miles the upgrade will bring, but it definitely will be better than the current 15 miles range.
Due to the power upgrade from the electric motor as well as the larger battery size, let’s expect the convertible and coupe to be heavier than the current model.
2019 BMW i8 Spyder Release Date and PRICE
No specific date yet but it is reported that the new BMW i8 Spyder 2019 will go on sale sometime in 2018 as 2019 model. Before the Spyder, its coupe sibling will arrive first later this year. There are no words on the pricing yet, but just like other convertibles, i8 Spyder definitely will be more expensive compared to the coupe.
