2018 Toyota Avensis Touring Sports Spotted in Europe with Heavy Camouflage. Toyota Europe chief executive officer, Johan van Zyl stated in an interview last year that Toyota Avensis fate in the future would be “under survey” because it flopped in the market last year.
Judging from that statement as well as the car’s sales number in the past couple of years, it is almost certain that we will not see the D-segment car anytime soon if it is not completely ended. Last year, the sales of the compact executive sedan couldn’t even go past 35,000 units.
This is definitely an extremely bad number considering more than 103,000 units could be sold before 2008 financial crisis, and more than 116,000 were sold in 1998 even in the midst of Asian financial crisis.
2018 Toyota Avensis Touring Sports Specifications
The SUV and crossover boom in European region for the past several years also takes part in Avensis failure to touch the decent number of sales. SUV and crossover boom in Europe reached its highest peak in 2015, and since then, there is simply no place for other genres of cars especially executive saloon like Avensis.
But when we finally have gathered enough courage to bid farewell to Avensis, a highly disguised prototype of the D-segment car is spotted testing in Europe. It clearly indicates that Toyota is not completely losing hope in Avensis and the Japanese automaker has a plan to make the car more appealing and competitive in the midst of SUV trend that certainly will not go down anytime soon.

The 2018 Toyota Avensis Touring Sports car was spied in station wagon guise, and it covered with tons of camouflage and faux body panels. The headlight looks different with the current model, but it seems like it is not the final choice. As a matter of fact, up to this time, the production-spec elements are only the windows, wheels and taillights.
The other parts are still tentative, and we see more changes in the next spy shots. It is to be expected since Toyota cannot afford to make any mistake for the new Avensis to avoid another flop
To give 2018 Toyota Avensis Touring Sports better drivability, Toyota will shed the car’s weight as much as possible. It probably will be achieved by incorporating more lightweight materials because the size of the car will not be reduced. As a matter of fact, the prototype seems to have a longer wheelbase, which means more spacious cabin and storage. To refresh your memory, the current model’s wheelbase is 2,700 mm long while the trunk’s space is 543 L with seats up and 1,609 L with seats folded down.
As far as the powertrain is concerned, it is highly possible that the new generation Avensis will be powered by the new 1.6 L turbo engine, which can generate around 120 to 150 HP. That one is for the gas engine. As for the diesel unit, it seems like the old 1.6 L D4D will be replaced with 1.5 L and 2.0 L from BMW.
Giving Avensis a new engine lineup is a part of Toyota’s effort to improve the car’s fuel economy, which definitely will help to bring more new buyers once the car is launched. According to reports, the new 2018 Toyota Avensis Touring Sports will debut at Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
