2018 Mercedes-Benz CLE — Once again, the next generation Mercedes-Benz CLS is spotted testing in Germany. But this time, instead of one camouflaged car, a spy video provided by walkoART YouTube channel let us see a lineup of the new CLS prototype.
Setting the newest spy video aside, the debate regarding which name will be used for the next CLS keeps going strong. Up to this time, Mercedes still has not officially announced whether the new car will still be called CLS or it will be changed into CLE.
2018 Mercedes-Benz CLE Specifications Leaked
Formerly, it is believed that the next generation CLS will retain its old moniker. Since it is important for the new car to stay on the brand. However, considering the company’s latest naming structure, CLE possibility cannot be ruled out.
The last letter in Mercedes new productions always indicates the size of the car or the platform family. For instance, GLC is related to C-Class while GLE to E-Class. Since the new CLS will share the same Modular Rear Architecture (MRA) platform with the latest Mercedes-Benz E-Class, it will not be a surprise if the new CLS will end up called CLE when it is launched to the market.
CLS or CLE
Speaking of the MRA platform, thanks to it the new 2018 Mercedes-Benz CLE will be longer hence more cabin room. Furthermore, still courtesy of the platform, the car will be lighter despite its longer stance. As a result, we can expect the new generation CLS to have better performance and fuel economy.
Just like its predecessor, new CLS will retain the luxury 4-door coupe body style. It means, if the new car ends up with CLE moniker, it will be the seventh body style in the E-Class after 2-door coupe, convertible, SUV, SUV coupe, sedan, and wagon.

Going back to the spy video. Unfortunately, it still has not revealed anything significant in terms of design. Just like the previous spy shots, we can still see that the new car retains old CLS sloping roofline and blended-style rear windscreen. In addition, it also gets new front headlights as well as new L-shaped LED indicator.

It seems like the next generation CLS will benefit from Mercedes’ latest engine lineup. That such as the powerful inline-six M256 engine that belts out not less than 300 kW and 500 Nm of torque. Furthermore, we can also expect the more powerful 4.0 L twin-turbo V8 M176 engine to power the range topping ‘500’ models.
Finally, at this stage of development, it seems like new CLS will be ready to launch by the end of 2017.
