2018 Hyundai Kona Subcompact Crossover Teased. Hyundai has finally officially announced its long-awaited new subcompact crossover and also released the teaser image at the same time. Continuing its long tradition of SUV naming, this new compact B-segment SUV will be named after a travel destination in America.
After Santa Fe, Tucson and the new Veracruz, this time the South Korean car maker calls its newest subcompact SUV Kona. Of course, the name is not randomly chosen. Hyundai said that Kona is picked as the name because it perfectly reflects the adventurous nature of the car.
2018 Hyundai Kona Specifications
“The Hawaiian destination is valued by North Pacific adventurers as a base for many thrill-seeking activities, including surfing, water skiing, and scuba diving, among other extreme sports. The island’s energetic image is reflected in the innovative, practical and highly functional design of Hyundai’s new lifestyle-focused SUV,” Hyundai stated in the press release.
2018 Hyundai Kona probably will be based on the global i20, which will make the car related to Accent subcompact. Furthermore, the final styling of the subcompact crossover will be very important since it will show where Hyundai’s design direction will head in the future.
The thing about subcompact crossovers nowadays is they always look more and more like a hatchback, which is somehow, less athletic. But Hyundai said that Kona will be different and guarantees that its new model will possess “true SUV genes.” In addition, the styling also will be progressive and perfectly describes the beauty of modern lifestyle.
The teaser doesn’t show too many things, but at least we can see that Kona gets Hyundai’s new 6-point Cascading grille. The same grille we see on the new i30. The spy shots, on the other hand, reveals more design elements. At the front, the LED daytime is placed higher while the main lamp unit is lower. Meanwhile, on the rear, the car gets new LED tail lights and also light guides as well as skid plate that screams SUV style.
Hyundai has yet to say anything regarding 2018 Kona’s powertrain. However, judging from how the car sounded when testing in Death Valley sometimes last year, the turbocharger is definitely on the menu. Furthermore, there is a high chance that the car will end up carry the usual T-GDI and CRDi engine.
