2018 Holden Monaro — As Holden Commodore’s local production will stop in 2017, there are a lot of speculations regarding the company’s plan post-Commodore. One of the most mentioned models that are rumored to replace the very well-loved Commodore in Australia is Holden Monaro.
As a matter of fact, Monaro rumors have been going around since early 2015, and every concept the company through to the public was speculated as the next Monaro. However, nothing comes to realization up to this point.
2018 Holden Monaro Specifications
We are definitely curious how next generation Monaro will look like if it ever makes it to the production line. Luckily, Theophilus Chin recently rendered a two-door coupe based on the latest Holden NG Commodore. And judging from its elegant pillarless style, in a way, such a car has what it takes to bring Monaro badge.
But the real question is, will it be possible for NG Commodore to be sold in Australia as Holden Monaro?. Considering the backlash Holden got from social media, selling NG Commodore with Monaro name could be a very strategic movement. As we know, Australian public demanded Holden retire Commodore name and just move on to something new instead of using it for the Germany imported model. However, the company persists in selling the new Opel Insignia in February 2018 as a Commodore despite of the protest.
Even though new monaro 2017 is an excellent post-Commodore strategy, but Holden needs to move very cautiously if this company wants to go forward in bringing Monaro back to life. Monaro is an iconic 2-door version of Holden’s biggest sedan, and it had built such loyal followings since it was first produced between 1968 and 1977.
Furthermore, the RWD coupe also performed well in the market when the VT-VX Commodore revival version was sold between 2001 and 2006.
In terms of style, an NG Commodore-based, just like what the rendering shows, might be a good successor for Monaro. However, performance wise, maybe it is more suitable to be a continuation of the 1990s Calibra coupe or the V8 engined modified Opel Monza. Somehow, NG Commodore just doesn’t scream Monaro no matter from which perspective we see it.
If 2018 Holden Monaro would see the light of the day, maybe it will be better to base it on the Buick Avenir concept that was introduced at 2015 Detroit Auto Show.
The RWD Buick Avenir gets Camaro underpinning, the latest direct injected V6 engine and 9-speed automatic transmission that definitely can live up to Monaro’s reputation. It definitely will be good but let’s not get our hopes up until the company takes some real actions.
