2018 BMW M550i xDrive Will Arrive Next Spring. BMW has just recently introduced the range-topping performance model in the current 5 series lineup, the 2018 BMW M550i xDrive. As mentioned in its name, the car will become the M Performance 5-series for 2018 model lineup. The details of the car were announced last Saturday. And the specifications live up to its title as the best performance model in the lineup.
2018 BMW M550i xDrive full Specifications
The M Performance styling cues are the most noteworthy part of the new 2018 BMW M550i xDrive in terms of design. The visual cues brought by M Performance kit include black chrome tailpipes and front air intake coated in striking gray metallic color. Besides, the gray metallic treatment also continues on the grille frame and mirror caps, giving some harmony to the overall design.
Furthermore, the car is also graced by M badge, M rear trunk spoiler, M Sport exhaust system and indeed some M aero tweaks here and there. As a part of the mechanical tweaks from the M Performance kit, you can expect this car to come with M Sport brake and caliper as well as M Sport steering rack tune.
The driving assistance features in this performance car are also worth noted. To make driving more convenient, the car comes with Active Lane Keeping Assistant, Evasion Aid, Active Cruise Control and also a bunch of safety equipment.
The upcoming 2018 BMW M550i xDrive is powered by 4.4 L twin-turbo V8 engine. Together with precision injection system plus Valvetronic valve lift and Double-Vanos variable camshaft timing control, the twin-turbo engine delivers 456 HP and 480-pound feet of torque.
Making it 1 HP better than the current 5 Class and 60 HP more than AMG E43. It is reported that the car can hit 60 mph from a standstill in less than 4 seconds and the top speed is limited to 155 mph.
|Engine||4.4 L twin-turbo V8|
|0-60 mph||4 seconds|
|Top speed||155 mph|
If you are fans of speed, we can say that this car will be little bit letting you down. BMW has decided to reduce the power and speed of this car, just to make it more comfortable for road drive. If you compare it with the M5 sedan, you can see the distinctly different on its power. The M5 sedan has more power at 560 HP, which is a lot stronger than M550i model.
Just like other 5 Series models, this car will be mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. But since this is a performance model, the transmission has been tweaked so that it can give more dynamic and better driving experience, especially with the addition of the shift paddles mounted on the steering wheel. BMW used Steptronic Sport transmission to create this condition.
As what the name suggests, BMW xDrive All-Wheel Drive system definitely will come as standard on this model. Like a car with sporty characteristic, the system will usually send the power to the rear wheels, but the torque surely can be split to any wheels independently when it is deemed necessary.
