2018 BMW 530e iPerformance Plug-in Hybrid Joins New 5 Series Lineup. BMW finally confirms that 2018 BMW 530e iPerformance plugin hybrid is the new member in 5 Series lineup and it is ready to rock the market next year.
The company claims that this plugin hybrid car is an all-rounded model that will offer not only performance but also luxury and efficiency. As a matter of fact, 530 iPerformance is dubbed as “the most frugal 5 Series.”
2018 BMW 530e iPerformance Plug-in Hybrid Specifications
In terms of design, the new 2018 BMW 530e iPerformance plug-in hybrid is pretty much the same with all the models in 5 Series G30 family. However, some styling cues distinguish this car as a performance model. Outside, those styling cues include eDrive badges here and there, blue slats in the twin-kidney grille and cap on the front-left fender.
As a result, the car looks more sophisticated and elegant on its interior. Furthermore, we believe that this new design is also what BMW tried, to give their customer comfort when they drive this car.
Inside, the original battery placement contributes in providing spacious room. The 9.2 kWh battery is placed in a space saving location under the rear seat. As a result, the size of the battery will not affect the car’s cargo capacity.
Engine, Electric Range
The new 530 iPerformance PHEV has a combined power of 284 HP and 310-pound feet of torque. Courtesy of 2.0 L inline-4 turbocharged petrol engine and an electric motor equipped with 9.2 kWh lithium-ion battery. The internal combustion engine itself is rated at 180 HP and 215-pound feet of torque. while the electric motor generates 95 HP with 28 miles full electric range.
It is reported that the 0-60 mph time of this plugin hybrid car is 6.1 seconds and the top speed is 130 mph. Meanwhile, in full electric mode, the top speed will be limited to 87 mph.
The numbers sound very promising so far, but please note that this is only the preliminary spec, so it still subjects to some changes. Furthermore, both rear and all-wheel drive options are available, but all will be mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.
One of the most noteworthy things of the battery is the charging time. The company claims that the lithium-ion battery can be fully charged in 7 hours with the regular socket. However, it will only take 3 hours with fast charging solution. What you need to do is upgrading it to 240V outlet to get the effect.

Up to this time, BMW USA has not announced the fuel efficiency of this new model. But probably, it will not be too far from European spec which is rated at 2L/100 km. If that was the case, we could expect that this car can run for around 28 miles (45 km) in full electric mode. That also means we can save more fuel.
